Prof. Nicaise Ndembi is included in Africa Health 20 because he sits at the intersection of epidemic preparedness, vaccine manufacturing, and African health sovereignty. Appointed in late 2024 to lead IVI’s Africa Regional Office in Kigali from January 2025, he moved into the role after helping shape Africa CDC’s continental preparedness work and the Partnerships for African Vaccine Manufacturing.
What makes his influence especially significant is that it bridges emergency response and long-term institution building: not only stopping outbreaks, but helping build the research, development, and manufacturing capacity Africa will need to rely less on external supply. In 2025, that combination of scientific credibility, continental strategy, and vaccine-systems leadership makes him one of the figures shaping African health in real time.
