Dr. Sabin Nsanzimana

Minister of Health, Rwanda

Dr. Sabin Nsanzimana is included in Africa Health 20 because he represents the kind of health leadership Africa needs more of: technically grounded, data-literate, and able to operate at the ministerial level without sounding detached from implementation reality. Rwanda’s Ministry of Health identifies him as Minister of Health and highlights his previous leadership of the Rwanda Biomedical Centre, the University Teaching Hospital of Butare, and major national HIV and hepatitis programs.

His influence matters because he brings epidemiological credibility, biomedical leadership, and delivery experience into one of the continent’s most closely watched health systems. In 2025, that relevance was reinforced by Rwanda’s push for local manufacturing, including the launch of an auto-disable syringe facility, which the ministry framed as part of stronger access, resilience, and African production capacity.

Influence areas: Health systems leadership; epidemiology; public health innovation; local manufacturing.
